The development of language, communication and vocabulary is of the upmost importance to young children. Hunton & Arrathorne School is a language rich school; developing oracy and speaking and listening skills in a progressive way throughout the children’s time in school.

Language is something children acquire as they grow and learn. The best way to develop language is through interaction. As parents, the way to interact with your children is to spend time with them and the best learning opportunities are found during play.

Children’s speech develops at different rates. This Speech Sound Developmental Wheel gives parents an indication of which sounds are generally produced by children at different ages. Remember – this is just a guide! If you are at all concerned about your child’s speech development, please speak to a member of staff in school.
