At Hunton & Arrathorne Community Primary School, we have proudly created an ambitious curriculum for all learners; through careful, progressive planning with the aim of we aspire to cultivate a learning environment which is creative, deep, innovative and exciting. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, the National Curriculum is complimented by the ‘Hunton 36 Before Y6’– which takes into account the local curriculum, and our pupil’s cultural capital needs. It is our ambition that through learning today, children are equipped for life tomorrow.
Our curriculum is rooted in our core values ‘Care – Aspire – Excel’, which permeate all actions in our school. Further to this, our ‘Curriculum Aims’ are bespoke to our children and their individual needs.
Curriculum Intent:
We want our pupils:
To care about themselves, their class, school, the community and the wider world. To aspire to contribute to their class, school, community and wider world. To have the drive to excel in whatever they choose to do.
Through careful weaving into the curriculum and wider school life, it is our intent that pupils at Hunton & Arrathorne Community Primary School will be:
- Lifelong readers
- Happy and healthy
- Inquisitive, with a thirst for knowledge
- Change-makers
- Risk takers
- Creators
Alongside our core curriculum drivers which infiltrate all subject areas, each subject has its own intent which combines the National Curriculum and the needs of our children. These statements are available on the school website and in paper form.
Curriculum Implementation
The ‘H&A Curriculum’ has been designed to have the National Curriculum and EYFS Curriculum at its core; through this the intent of our curriculum is explored and exploited through careful linking. Our subject leaders have used the National Curriculum to create a plan which is exciting, strategic and progressive – this is implemented as a rich series of learning experiences within school where are children are encouraged to ‘know more and remember more’.
The curriculum is coherently sequenced with knowledge building up over time. The H&A Curriculum is progressive and ensures that every child is given the appropriate opportunities to learn the necessary skills and knowledge through inspirational experiences in every subject. Children’s learning is enriched through experiences, visitors, theme weeks and other curriculum enhancements. The teaching of reading, writing and basic mathematics underpins all aspects of the curriculum in all stages at our school, however an equal emphasis is placed on all curriculum areas and, through consistent and innovative approaches, children experience depth of learning in all they do.
To further support the formal curriculum, we provide a range of extra-curricular artistic, creative and sporting activities which children are actively encouraged to participate in. These are provided both by school staff and external providers. The children, staff and parents are very proud of our school’s sportsmanship and high quality musical and drama performances, which reflect the very best of our children ‘aspiring to excel’.
To further support our curriculum, we have the ‘H&A 36’ – thirty six experiences which we are committed to ensuring children are involved in before they leave our school in Year 6. This enables us to interweave knowledge of our local area, gaps in pupil’s cultural capital and things are pupils are passionate about such as the environment, performance in music and drama and high quality learning in sport. This ensures children are ‘aspiring to excel’, not only in the curriculum but in all aspects of school life which further helps secure our curriculum intent.
Further information on the implementation within each subject area, is available in the curriculum area of the school website and in paper form.
